Things to do when affected by monkeypox

Monkeypox is a viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus. Treatment for monkeypox is mostly symptomatic, meaning it aims to reduce symptoms and promote recovery. There is no specific drug that directly cures monkeypox, but several approaches can be used in its management:

1. Symptomatic treatment:

- Pain relievers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol to reduce fever and pain.

- Ointments or creams to treat skin lesions or rashes that appear, and keep the skin clean to prevent secondary infections.

2. Antiviral:

- Antiviral drugs such as *tecovirimat (TPOXX)* have been approved for use in monkeypox cases in several countries. This drug was originally developed for smallpox and can also be effective in treating monkeypox infections.

3. Vaccination:

- *Smallpox vaccines*, such as *ACAM2000* or *JYNNEOS*, can also be used as a preventive measure, since the smallpox and monkeypox viruses are similar.

- These vaccines are recommended for people at high risk of infection, such as those who have had close contact with monkeypox cases or laboratory workers who have been potentially exposed.

4. Isolation and Prevention:

- Because monkeypox can be spread through physical contact with lesions, respiratory secretions, or body fluids of an infected person, isolation and good hygiene are important steps in preventing its spread.

If someone is suspected of having monkeypox, it is important to seek medical care promptly to monitor symptoms and reduce the risk of complications.
